Plantago lanceolata, also known as ribwort plantain or narrow leaf plantain, is a perennial bushy plant belonging to the Plantaginaceae family.
Chemistry
The root of Plantago lanceolata contains steroids and triterpenoids such as
sitosterol and cholestane derivatives, terpenoids, phenolic compounds
(salicyclic acid, tyrosol, coniferol, isolariciresinol, arbutine, isotachioside,
tachioside and sinapyl alcohol) flavonoids, cumarins (scopoletin), and indole-3-carboxaldehyde.
Indications
Ribwort Plantain extract is generally used in cough syrups. Besides this usage it appears to be a very diverse medical cabinet addition, acting as an
antihistamine, antifungal, antioxidant, analgesic, and even a moderate
antibiotic.
