Description

Herb

Pink Cretan rockrose (Cistus creticus L.) is a Mediterranean shrubby plant reaching the heights of 0.5 to 1.5 meters. It features woody stems, resinous aromatic leaves, and distinctive pink to purple flowers with bright yellow stamens. The plant’s valuable resin, labdanum, has been traditionally recognised for its potent antiviral and antimicrobial effects.

Chemistry

The chemical profile of Cistus extract is rich in polyphenolic compounds, including catechins, myricetin, quercetin, kaempferol, ellagic acid, and gallic acid derivatives. These constituents, together with tannins and proanthocyanidins, contribute to the formation of protective biofilms that inhibit pathogen adhesion. Additionally, the resin fraction contains labdane-type diterpenes such as manoyl oxide and cembrene, which enhance the extract’s bioactivity.

Indications

Cistus extract preparations are used to support immune defence and help prevent respiratory and oral viral infections. Its polyphenol content inhibits viral entry and replication, while its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects maintain mucosal health and immune balance. It is commonly used in oral sprays, lozenges, and nutraceuticals for antiviral support.
