Description

Herb

Urtica dioica, also known as common nettle or stinging nettle (although not all members of this species sting), is a perennial herbaceous flowering plant belonging to the Urticaceae family.

Chemistry

The root of Urtica dioica contains steroids and triterpenoids such as sitosterol and cholestane derivatives, terpenoids, phenolic compounds (salicyclic alcohol, tyrosol, coniferol, isolariciresinol, arbutine, isotachioside, tachioside and sinapyl alcohol) flavonoids, cumarins (scopoletin), and indole-3-carboxaldehyde.

Indications

The root extract of Urtica dioica is generally used for the enlarged prostate gland. Symptoms such as pollakiuria, nocturia (frequent nocturnal urination), and urinary urgency are relieved by its usage, whereas residual urine production decreases, and urinary outflow is enhanced.
