Encapsulation & Coating

Actives coated on the spray dryer in a single pass, for personal care, food supplements and food.

Encapsulation in one pass

When the finished product is applied to the skin, the reason for drying is often the shell rather than the powder.

When an active is fed together with a carrier, the drying step forms the coating itself. No separate coating equipment is needed, and the material sees no second heat load.

What the coating does

Controlled release

The active is released over time.

Protection

Unstable actives kept from oxygen, light and moisture.

Lower irritation

Less direct contact with a free active.

Taste and odour masking

Bitter or pungent ingredients covered.

How the coating forms

  1. Feed

Active and carrier enter the dryer as one liquid.

  2. Droplets

A rotary disc breaks the feed into droplets. Disc speed sets the particle size.

  3. Particle

Water leaves and the carrier sets around the active.

What to send before a study

The active

Heat, light, oxygen and pH limits narrow the carrier choice.

The purpose

A carrier suited to slow release may not suit masking.

The specification

Active content, particle size and moisture targets.

The volume

Project volume decides which dryer runs the work.

Contract drying and encapsulation run on a dedicated line within the facility. Animal, marine and nut origin materials are out of scope.
